El arquitecto podía hacer algo por la sociedad. Vi esa posibilidad – Toyo Ito


 
 
“Pudo ocurrir que, de la misma manera que la geometría cartesiana fue primero una característica de Mies van der Rohe y un límite después, la búsqueda de la ligereza no te permita crecer. Pero no me sucedió del todo así. Antes yo pensaba que la arquitectura debía ser fundamentalmente estética. No tenía en cuenta su sentido social. Tenía la impresión de que los arquitectos no estábamos integrados en la sociedad y debíamos de funcionar al margen. Pero a mediados de los años noventa comencé a construir en Occidente y levanté la Mediateca de Sendai con una geometría de pilares libre. No soy optimista. Pero esa salida al mundo me hizo pensar que el arquitecto podía hacer algo por la sociedad. Vi esa posibilidad”
 
“It could be that, in the same way that Cartesian geometry was first characteristic of Mies van der Rohe and a limit then finding the way not to grow. But I did quite well. I used to think that architecture should be primarily aesthetic. It took into account its social meaning. He felt that architects were not integrated into society and we had to run outside. But in the mid-nineties I started building in the West and raised the Sendai Mediatheque pillars with a free geometry. I am not optimistic. But that exit to the world made me think that the architect could do something for society. I saw that possibility”
